Australian T20 captain Aaron Finch is adamant runs will come “very soon” as he declared he had the full support of teammates and selectors ahead of his team’s World Cup defence.
Finch was out for just one in Australia’s crushing ODI win over Zimbabwe on Tuesday, made only 15 in the opening game and has averaged just 15.90 in one-day cricket since the start of 2021.
He also made consecutive ducks in his last two starts against Sri Lanka and hasn’t made a century since 2020.
The 35-year-old went straight to the nets after his dismissal on Wednesday to do more work on his batting but was adamant on Thursday that he felt “really good” and was confident in the support he had to lead Australia in the T20 World Cup in November. Live Cricket
“I know that I have the full support of the players and the coaching and selection staff, so I’m working hard on my game, it just hasn’t quite flowed yet,” Finch said as the World Cup squad was announced, with Tim David the only inclusion to the squad that won the tournament last November.
“It comes down to giving yourself a bit of time and hopefully getting a big one shortly.
“I’m feeling really good. A few more runs would have been nice, but I’m just trying to work out my footwork patterns.
“Like most players, your first 10 balls are your most vulnerable in any innings that you play, it’s just continuing to make sure I am starting my innings in the right way.
“I am just getting a little bit planted down my front foot and when I get a bit heavy there it starts to effect the rest of my game because you lose a bit of intent and a bit of flow.
“But I feel as though that’s coming along really well. The rewards will be there very soon, just hasn’t happened as yet.”
Selection chief George Bailey also dismissed any suggestion Finch’s position as captain was in any doubt.
“Finchy’s record over his entire career is a pretty incredible one,” he said.
“He’s the leader of the team and you’d be a very brave person to write him off.”
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc also confirmed Finch had the backing of his teammates.
“He’ll find it, he’s played a lot of cricket. He’s got a fantastic white-ball record,” Starc said after Wednesday’s game.
“He’s certainly got the backing of the group, and I’m sure he’ll find the runs in games to come.”
