Inmarsat has been selected as the inflight connectivity (IFC) provider for Qatar Airways’ Boeing 787-9 and 737-10 fleet, the British satellite telecommunications company announced.

With a long standing partnership of over 10 years with the airline, Inmarsat decided to launch the service ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022 Qatar.
“Understanding the demand this event will have on Qatar Airways’ business, as the country sees a huge influx of passengers, meant the airline had to rethink its connectivity needs to ensure every passenger gets the best possible experience onboard,” Inmarsat Aviation’s vice president of Europe, Middle East and Africa Neale Faulkner told Arabian Business. Inmarsat’s service “includes two Inmarsat-6s, the most sophisticated commercial communications satellites ever built, both of which are scheduled to enter service next year,” Faulkner said adding that it will be followed by three additional satellites in geostationary orbit – adding speed, capacity and resilience – and two in highly elliptical orbit, enabling commercial mobile broadband service for aircrafts flying in higher elevations and across the Arctic.
Passengers on aircrafts by Qatar Airways will continue to benefit from the existing inflight connectivity experience, however, the new launch will provide live updates of the matches, video replays and livestream games from 30,000 feet.
Passengers can also browse the internet, use email and messenger apps, scroll social media, stream video and music, through Inmarsat’s GX Aviation broadband service.
It is not immediately clear how the new service could affect ticket prices.
