Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) have announced a new franchise tournament called The 6ixty. The first edition of the tournament- The 6ixty 2022– will commence on August 24. A total of 12 games will be played during the tournament.
The tournament will have a different format and rules than the regular cricket games. During The 6ixty 2022 tournament, each innings will consist of 10 overs. There are also some new rules to make the tournament unique and interesting.
The 6ixty tournament begins on August 24 and will witness the final on August 28. The venue of the tournament is Warner Park Stadium in St Kitts. There are 6 teams in the tournament namely- Barbados Royals, Jamaica Tallawahs, St. Lucia Kings, Trinbago Knight Riders, St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots and Guyana Amazon Warriors.
The 6ixty 2022 Format and Rules
The rules of the matches will be a little different than regular cricket games. Each team will play 10 overs while batting. Of these, 30 balls will be bowled from one end. Later, the final 30 balls will be bowled from the other end. These 30 balls will be bowled in 5 separate overs and one bowler can only bowl a maximum of 2 overs during an innings.
Each team will have only six wickets. After the dismissal of the 6th wicket, the team will be considered all-out. Each batting team will have 2 powerplay overs. They can unlock the 3rd powerplay over by hitting 2 sixes in the first 12 balls. This extra powerplay over can be taken between the 3rd to 9th overs.
If the teams do not complete their overs in time, one player will be removed from the field for the final 6 balls. Fans will vote for the timing of a ‘mystery free hit’, where a batsman cannot be dismissed by the bowler.
